I did the Alpha course quite a few years ago even though I did it out of curiosity rather than any special need that I was feeling at the time. Before I watched the introductory video I had no problem with my religion and my belief in God....or so I thought. I did not feel that I was searching for anything missing in my life and I disagreed with the introductory video "Christianity: Boring, Irrelevant, Untrue" because my concept was that Christianity was the exact opposite. It was important to me, not irrelevant.
When I left that initial viewing I had already started to realise that I had been missing out on something in my life despite my know-it-all approach. I was soon to find out that what I had missed completely till then was that though I had religion in my life I had no relationship with the person I was supposed to be believing in. Yes, I realised that God did not sit on a cloud up there looking down on us as we struggled with our daily life as most of us think but that He was right here with us, right by our side, helping us, leading us, loving us. And this even at home and at work.
I found that as a consultant in the fast moving, cut-throat and consumerist world of advertising and marketing, people were always asking me for answers to their business problems and how to reach success...but who was I to turn to when I needed to have answers to my own questions for success in my life? I soon found that "really" being able to turn to Him was the answer. He was not just a Sunday thing, but that I could take Him to work with me and discuss work related problems as well. True, our God doesn't speak to us as directly as our friends do, but does He speak loudly when we are prepared to listen and take note of Him!
Yes, I can say that the Alpha course made a big change in me so much so that after I finished it I had decided to help out for a few years with its running. Now that I am no longer so directly involved I can see that the great investment I made in devoting those initial ten evenings to attend the course were very well spent. So many who have done the course with me since have said the same thing and it proved to also be so exciting and much fun as well.
Yes, God can be fun too you know!! I totally recommend Alpha. I hope it works for you too. |
