The Alpha Course is the principal outreach of the City on a Hill Community, a community made up of lay persons who have chosen to follow Christ’s calling to be witnesses of His light in this world.
Alpha was first run in Malta as an outreach of the International Catholic Programme for Evangelization (ICPE). The first course was held in 1997, and since then hundreds of persons have rediscovered the true meaning of their faith and have set out on the journey to holiness through their attendance at this course. In pursuance of their mission to prepare Catholics to become more effective evangelizers, ICPE trained a group of people to act as a service team to be able to run the course in Maltese parishes.
Along the years, new members joined the team and eventually, in November 2006, a bold decision was taken by the members of the Alpha Team to form the City on a Hill Community. As the Community continues to grow in love for Christ, it continues to reach out to persons who are searching for the true meaning of life through the organisation of the Alpha Course and other related outreaches.
The City on a Hill Community currently uses the premises at the basement level of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish Church in Ibrag to run its outreaches.

The calling of this Catholic lay group is to be a bearer of Christ’s light in today’s world.
By living a life in Christ, the members of City on a Hill Community commit themselves to share their personal experience of God’s love with each other and with people of all ages, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Through a heart of service, hospitality and most of all agape love, the mission of the Community is to bring people to experience and sustain a personal relationship with God.
